About Chris Dodd

Freelance journalist, editor, author and rowing historian

Journalism After Nottingham University I joined the Guardian

in 1965 as a sub-editor in the Features department. In 1994

I became a freelance in order to set up the River & Rowing

Museum while continuing as the Guardian’s rowing

correspondent until 2004, when I moved to the Independent. In about 2010 the latter

lost interest in both rowing and its esteemed correspondent.

I am a contributor to rowing publications and have been involved in the foundation of three magazines - Regatta, World Rowing and RowingVoice.

Regatta began in 1987 as a magazine about rowing for rowers, published by the Amateur Rowing Association. I was its editor from the first issue until 2002.

World Rowing was introduced as a paper magazine in time for the 1996 Olympics.

Published by the International Rowing Federation, it continues on line.

RowingVoice was an independent electronic magazine set up by Rachel Quarrell and myself which entered the air waves after the success of the daily Eton Mess during the World Rowing Championships in 2006. The Voice covered the big events like nobody else for the next four years, and still occasionally blogs and tweets (voice.rowingservice.com).

I continue to write books and blog for the web site Hear The Boat Sing that is aimed at  historians and rowing nuts (heartheboatsing.com)

River & Rowing Museum

David Lunn-Rockliffe and myself came up with the idea of the River & Rowing Museum which opened in its iconic building in 1998. The museum designed by Sir David Chipperfield has won many awards, including being ranked among the world’s top 50 museums by the Times.

I am currently the rowing historian emeritus and a vice-president of the RRM, engaged in special exhibitions and archives, and a board member of the Friends of Rowing History who organize rowing history forums in Henley-on-Thames and the US.
